The "Bourgeoisie" and its cellar
The community of Grimentz has a unique history.
In 1550, the bourgeois of Grimentz built this house, known as the "Bourgeoisie". It originally only had a bread oven and a kitchen. Built for gatherings, meetings and encounters, it also fulfils the role of communal administration today. The bourgeoisie also offered an overnight place to stay for travellers. It still has a welcoming role today, because groups and hosts visit it to meet.
Every Monday, you will be able to visit the Bourgeoisie and the old village of Grimentz. From the history of granaries to the Bourgeois of Grimentz, everything is explained. To know more about the cellar, please click on “details”…
|
The basement of the bourgeoisie is occupied by a large wine cellar which houses wines of more than a hundred years in age. This collection of larch barrels (some of them really ancient), preserves the famous “Glacier Wine”. The oldest wine is dated 1886.
Certain barrels definitely date from the time of the building’s construction looking at the way they were made (the wood is torn instead of sawn). The barrel of 1969, the most recent, is not for the “Glacier Wine” but holds new wine used to top up the others.

The Sacrificial Rocks |
|
The sacrificial rocks are certainly the most ancient testimonies left by our ancestors: the Celts. We know for a fact that Celts worshipped on enormous rocks in the open. There are small hollows in these rocks, primitive engravings, which served to hold the blood of sacrifices to present it to the divinity - animal sacrifices or sometimes human ones. Rocks carved like this are not only found in our village but all over Europe. The sacrificial rocks can be seen at Ilot Bosquet. Don't hesitate to come and visit these incredible relics.
